Choice Neighborhood Community Update

Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) ... The DRAFT PLAN was submitted to HUD, June 16, 2022. Review the DRAFT PLAN.

WORKING GROUPS

Housing Working Group

The mission of the Housing Working Group is to preserve and expand permanently affordable rental housing, and to expand opportunities for affordable homeownership.  It also encourage appropriate commercial development and address blighted and abandoned properties that affect our quality of life. It works to prevent resident displacement, and create a cooperative, vibrant, sustainable, and thriving community as detailed in our community plan. Co-Chairs are Sally Stadelman and Fred Smith.

Youth Development Working Group

The Youth Development Working Group is focused on improving the lives of young people.  The group piloted the Youth Exec leadership development program and facilitated Learn-and-Earn summer job opportunities for youth. Chair is Gia Haley.

Events Working Group

The Events Working Group brings individuals together for more comprehensive planning and implementation, building off of partnerships in the community. The events will relate to all areas of our community plan such as beautification of open space, public health, public safety, transportation and mobility, and arts/cultural preservation. Events we have hosted in the past includes: Fineview BBQ, Fineview Step Challenge, Harvest Festival, Unity Corner Ribbon Cutting, and Corner of Hope Ribbon Cutting. Chair is Greg Manley; Co-Chair is Christine Whispell.

Violence Prevention Working Group/Community Advisory Board

This is a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh, Fineview & Perry Hilltop

A resident training is happening for 7 weeks through April 2022. Individuals will learn skills in relationship building, problem solving, effective listening and peaceful non-violent intervention. The training will improve community mental health and provide helpful ways to respond to trauma. Pathways to Safety Descriptions HERE
